TC107: Understand and Contribute to the mission and goals of the team

During the 2013 Homecoming spirit week my class and I wanted to do things that would set us apart from all other senior classes.  We not only wanted to have a downright fun and good time, but we also wanted to bond as a class and be more than just kids who graduate together, but a family.  By doing things such as float building and traditional class activities, we had already created fantastic memories; however, one day we decided to do a little more.

Wednesday of spirit week we planned a day called “BYLOC” meaning Bring Your Own Lawn Chair.  We all arrived at 6:50 in the morning, an hour before school started, and brought lawn chairs and blankets and sat on them out in the hallway for everyone else to see when they got there.  Originally, I was the first person to show up and I truly did not think many other people would show up other than the ones who planned it.  However, I was mistaken when over half of our senior class showed up with lawn chairs, sat down in the hallway and all started socializing and mingling with one another.  Some people even talking to other people that they generally do not talk to.  Once everyone was there, about three people brought donuts for the entire class and we all sat, ate donuts, and really bonded with each other, which was the goal from the start.  We even surprised some teachers by the way we all came together to make it an awesome morning by bonding with each other and I can honestly say that after that moment, I have felt even closer to my class knowing we all share that memory.

Within the journalism field, I am going to have to understand what the goals are for the group of people I am working with and contribute my stories and ideas into it.  For example, if the paper needs to do a hard-hitting edition on a striking topic and they need it to be as deep as possible, I will need to do my part in possibly getting pictures of the event that go well with the stories.  If I don’t understand what the main goal of the edition is, my work will not matter and the whole thing could not work. Understanding and contributing to what needs to be done in the workplace is absolutely vital in the journalism field because one miscommunicated thing could throw off everyone else’s understanding and then your failed contribution will lead to more.

Personally, being able to understand and contribute to the mission and goals of the team has helped me in more ways than one.  I better know how to make sure I do understand what my group of friends or class wants to achieve and then along with everyone else’s help we make something great.  For example, with pep assemblies we all pitch in to make it an extremely fun experience for everyone.  Understanding how important it is, I always make sure to pay money we need to get things such as noisemakers or bring in inflatable characters that we dress up like us and crowd surf.  Understanding and contributing to specific goals of the team has helped me in more ways than one in high school and even just bringing the lawn chairs to school has proven that to me.
