English/Language Arts

1. Anorexia Persuasive Essay

2. India's Rape Crisis Essay

English and language arts has always been a strong point of mine which works out perfectly as the career path I have chosen, Journalism, involves a lot of writing. Sophomore year in my English Ten class, we had to learn how to write persuasive essays.  I chose to write mine on how there should be more funding for Anorexia Nervosa research and treatment. I learned a lot from writing the paper, especially about how underfunded Anorexia is compared to other mental illnesses. Writing this paper made me realize a lot and I really became passionate about the subject. I truly feel that it was one of my best pieces of writing to date, even though I was only a sophomore when I wrote it.

My other best piece of writing in English or Language Arts was my paper on India’s Rape Crisis written in my English Eleven class. We had just read Lord of the Flies and my teacher, Mr. Bulgrein, wanted us to write a paper comparing the book to a crisis somewhere else in the world. I chose to use India’s Rape Crisis as there were many similarities to the barbaric ways of the children and of the men who are mistreating the women in India. While writing the paper the whole situation really disturbed me and put things into perspective. When you read something such as Lord of the Flies you never think that something similar to that could actually happen. It shocked and taught me that it really does happen and you have to watch out.

Both of these pieces of work in English/Language Arts have taught me a lot and doing the work myself instead of just learning it out of a book made me more passionate on the subjects. My anorexia paper showed me how to professionally do a persuasive essay and make sure that I back it up with facts. Picking something that I was passionate to write about also made it even better as I was able to use the facts and figures that I found effectively. The paper on India’s rape crisis also helped me to learn that literature, although it is art, can often truly be imitated in real life. All in all, I am proud to say I wrote these pieces and I do call them some of my best work in an actual English class.
