Business/Technology

My sophomore year of high school I was in a Business Management class. We always had new assignments to show us how business and marketing worked. The teacher of the class, Mrs. Gregory, was also the one in charge of the school store, The Comet Corner. One of our assignments was to get into groups and come up with a product to sell in the store, we would all then vote on which two products would be chosen then split the class in half and each half would compete in selling one of the two products. The group I chose was to sell crewneck sweatshirts with the school logo on them.

The other group was selling flat-bill hats which were an up and coming trend at the time. My crewneck group worked very hard with marketing and getting the product out there and we ended up selling so many that we had to order more twice in the time it took the other group to even order their hats. We were so proud of the work we did and I was too because the crewneck idea was one that I really pushed from the start. All in all, the project didn’t just teach me how to buy and sell sweatshirts but it also taught me about competition in business and just how important it is to put yourself out there to succeed.

In the future, the skills I obtained will benefit me immensely. With Journalism it’s all about professionalism and in the business side of it, ads have to go into the paper which shows that a creative side is needed in order to produce them. Also, just putting yourself and your name out there to get jobs in the field is a major necessity. Personally, in life, a project like this helped my competitive edge and drive to get something I was proud of out there. It showed me that persistence is the key to success. It also taught me to work better with people who I otherwise would not associate with if not for the project. Selling crewneck sweatshirts and being successful while doing it was definitely one of my best pieces of work in high school.
