P108-Go beyond what is asked to improve personal, educational, or work- related projects

As a fundraiser for the Gay-Straight Alliance club we decided to sell cupcakes at lunches for a dollar each.  We needed to make more money for the club and we all really like cupcakes so we decided to sell them.  Originally, the plan was to go to the president of the club’s house and make a ton of rainbow cupcakes.  However, that plan fell through and so each member of the club had to make his or her own cupcakes.  So the night before the sale, I spent the entire time in the kitchen and made three batches of my personal specialty, red velvet cupcakes. During the class period before selling the cupcakes I made arrangements with my teacher to allow me to leave a couple minutes early in order to prepare everything.  Then, once the sale began, I was selling them like hotcakes- or hot cupcake- so to speak.

On top of having to make cupcakes for the GSA, I also had signed up to help out at my little sisters’ Halloween party and make treats.  I had seen a cute idea to make marshmallow witches using marshmallows, cookies, and chocolate and decided that I would make those as well.  Needless to say, I was baking in the kitchen from the time I got home until the time I went to bed. I was a very busy girl that night but knowing I was doing it all for someone else and a good cause really made it all worthwhile.  By stepping up and putting my baking skills to good use I feel I went above what was asked of me.

In Journalism, I am going to need to be able to go above and beyond to prove myself.  Journalism is a very competitive field and if I do not do something to set my work apart from the rest, I will not be successful.  Employers want someone who goes above and beyond what is asked of them, not just doing the bare minimum.  Also, in my personal life, I want people to feel like they can count on me to do the best job I can possibly do in whatever they ask me to do.  I’m not the type of person to do anything halfway; if I don’t go above and beyond to make sure something is absolutely perfect, it worries me.  I’m constantly worried about if I did enough even though I know that I did more than enough.  I’m always told that I am one of the most helpful people they’ve ever met, which honestly makes me feel amazing.
