P102:Demonstrate Safety and Self Control Requiring Minimum Discretion and Supervision

In July of 2012, I finished the second part of the driver’s training course which is required in order to pursue getting my actual drivers license.  My family and I spent the summer searching for a car to buy me and by October we had found one.  That same month, I took my road test and passed on the very first try.  I then went and officially got my driver’s license and have been driving ever since.  I now drive everywhere by myself and even drive my two younger sisters around.  I am proud to say that I have not gotten a speeding ticket or gotten into an accident at all since I have started driving.  I feel that having my license has given me a sense of responsibility and has made me even more cautious when I’m driving knowing that my parents are not right there to help me.

As far as the Journalism field goes, I am going to be put into dangerous situations in which I will have to report on and I will have to do that in a safe manner without anybody right there telling me every move to make.  I will have to know how to safely navigate the area, how to use equipment, and still get the job done.  There are many places that reporters and journalists have worked that really have not been the safest, which is why being able to demonstrate safety and self control is key to avoiding injuries on the job or any other disaster.

In my personal life, I have to be safe in everything I do.  Even when you are hanging out with friends, you have to have self control if a situation comes along that you know is not safe.  However, if you are participating in a potentially dangerous activity, you need to take all the precautions necessary in order to avoid getting hurt.  Staying safe in everything I do is very important to me.  I will have fun and do crazy things but I will always make sure I am safe while doing it.  For example, I want to go skydiving someday but if I do not pay attention in the class and use the equipment properly, it could end catastrophically.  Same thing goes for driving, if I were to pick up the habit of texting and driving, I would be putting myself and others in danger.  So, to stay safe in the car I make sure to keep my phone in my purse and out of sight.  Safety and self control really are important qualities to have in not only the professional sense- as it is part of your job- but also in your personal life because I know that I want to live as long as I possibly can.
