P107- Be self-motivated in taking responsibility

This school year, I was placed in the Honors English class.  In the beginning I was really having trouble and even failing quizzes and eventually I had a sixteen percent in the class.  It was really unlike me and I truly hated having a grade like that. Thankfully, Mr. Bulgrien allows us students to retake failed quizzes and make them up for up to seventy five percent of what you get on it.  So, I wrote him a message on one of my quizzes letting him know that I was in need of some help and he let me know what the quiz make up assignment was and when it was due.

I worked diligently in the class for two weeks straight, making up failed quizzes, getting caught up in the reading we were supposed to do, and making sure all of my assignments were done and done well.  After only two short weeks I had brought my grade up from an E to a B plus.  Nevertheless, I was beyond ecstatic as it meant that all my hard work had paid off.  Ever since that incident, I have been conscientious of my grade and been paying close attention to everything in the class and was praised on how much I had improved.  During the week of Halloween, Mr. Bulgrien had nominated me for The County Press newspaper’s HHHS Student of the Week.  In the article Mr. Bulgrien had stated, “Maitlynn consistently turns in excellent work, and she frequently has insightful input during our class discussions in Honors English Class.”  That really showed me that being self-motivated and taking the responsibility necessary to succeed is really an important quality to have.

In journalism, I am not going to have someone right over my shoulder telling me what to do and when and how to do it.  I am going to have to be self-motivated enough to get my work done and responsible enough to make those kinds of choices.  Being responsible is something that is seen as very professional, and journalism is certainly a very professional field.  The same reasoning stands for my personal life.  I am not going to have someone always telling me how to make my life choices.  I am going to have to be responsible enough to be able to make choices such as who I marry, if I have children, or even who to associate myself with.
