My Ability to Write

English has always been one of my strongest subjects and my junior year of high school, I really let that show. In March of 2013, in Journalism class, I entered my essay on Dorothea Lange in a local essay contest about Women in Science and Technology. After weeks of waiting we found out that my essay had won first place in the contest because of its originality and the woman I chose to write about. Dorothea Lange was one of the first female photojournalists to really make an impact in the field and because photography uses a camera-technology- I was able to use that in my essay. Two other girls in my class won the second and third place positions and we were all invited to the Susan B. Anthony Awards dinner provided by the Jackson Women’s History Council to read our essays. It was a great experience and really showed that I have what it takes to be a great writer.

At the end of last year, after being in Journalism class all three trimesters of the year and excelling in the class, I was awarded the Journalism departmental award. Throughout the year, I had won the Susan B. Anthony essay contest award, my group and I won a stroke public service announcement contest, and I had won an online political cartoon caption contest in which you insert your own caption. All in all Journalism class and all of the success I earned while in the class really proved to me and my parents that I could excel in the journalism field. With my awards and writing as proof, I know that it will all benefit me in the future. It will show future employers that my work is excellent enough for me to write for them. In my personal life it also shows that with hard work and time comes success. A wise teacher of mine, Mr. Matt Resor, once said “Sacrifice is necessary for earned success” and he could not be more correct.
