Being Friendly With a Diverse Group of People and Being Chosen to Represent Them

Sophomore year, I was chosen by my class to represent them on Homecoming Court along with my classmate, Alex Long. It was a great feeling being given such an honor as I know that it meant people liked me well enough and found me nice enough to represent them. My freshman year, I was not confident at all and went through a hard time the summer between freshman and sophomore year with my self confidence and depression. However, the start of sophomore year is when I began to change for the better. I began to socialize with a bigger group of people, I dressed in a way that made me happy and all around my confidence was higher.

When it came time to vote for who would represent our class on homecoming court, I had mentioned once that I wanted to be on court but knew my chances were pretty slim. However, just by the end of the day, I had a great amount of people walking up to me telling me they voted for me and then a week later it was revealed that my classmate, Alex, and I were voted on.  It really proved to me that being nice and friendly with a diverse group of people such as a high school class really does pay off. I was extremely honored to represent such a wonderful class and even now, as a Senior, I can still say the same.

As a Journalist, I am going to be interviewing and doing stories on all different kinds of people and being rude is not a way to do that. Being friendly to them is a way that I can ensure that I will get a good interview and do my job in a professional manner. I’m not always going to absolutely love the people I’m talking to, just like in a high school class, but I know to be kind and friendly with them as I respect them as an equal. In my personal life, I know that being friendly with people who are different from me is truly the way to go. I would very much rather be known for being kind and considerate, than be known for being rude and spiteful. I’m very proud to say that being friendly is one of my favorite qualities I have. I know that sometimes, when things get stressful, I can be a little bit rude and terse with people but everybody has their moments, what matters is how they bounce back from them.
