1. Pancake Project in Lab Science

2. Caffeine Paper

As I am more of an English and Writing type of person, most of my best work in science has always been papers and analyses on experiments. My freshman year in Lab Science we had to do a “food project” in which we picked an experiment to do with food then write an analysis on the result. My partner and I, both liking to eat and make pancakes decided to do a project on how what you put into the pancake batter affects how big or wide the pancake is.

It was a very interesting project and we carried it out as well as we could. It was one of my first science classes as a freshman and although we did not get an A+ on the project, I still learned a lot from it about scientific processes, lab work, and how to carry out experiments without a teachers’ assistance.

Another one of my best pieces of work was during Chemistry. It was a requirement by the school that we would have to do at least one writing assignment per trimester. One of our assignments was to take an article about the effects of caffeine and summarize and analyze the data in it. It was honestly one of the most fun scientific writings I have ever done because it was very interesting to me. It taught me a lot about interpreting data and putting it into my own words. It also showed me that despite all the negativity surrounding caffeine it can actually be a good thing, in moderation.

Both of these pieces of work in Science have taught me a lot about interpreting facts, figures, collecting and analyzing data, and how to carry out experiments on my own. Before doing either of these assignments, I would not know the first thing about doing scientific writing. In my future professional career of Journalism, I will always have data that will need to be interpreted and put into my own words in order to give a solid piece of work. In my personal life it will also help me to better analyze things and put them into words as I sometimes have trouble doing now.
