P104:Find New and Creative Ways to Solve Problems

This year, I am currently involved in Hanover-Horton’s production of Just Another High School Play.  I have two roles in the play and I also help with crew work.  One of the problems we were having with the set was that one of the flats, or walls, would not stay up.  We could not put a holding brace on it as the side that needed the brace would have been able to be seen from the audience.  Finding a way to hold up the wall was definitely going to take a lot of creativity and elbow grease.

After a lot of debate we finally came up with a solution; we were going to use rope to hold up the wall.  With the right angle the rope was going to work perfectly; however, the angle we needed required a hook to be drilled into the wall.  It was the perfect spot and angle to attach the rope except the problem was the wall was made of cement bricks and could not be drilled into.  Me and some other crew members brainstormed and eventually came up with the idea to get a small block of wood, use construction-grade glue called Liquid Nails to attach the wood the wall and drill the hook into that.  The plan worked beautifully and the wall then and still does stand perfectly straight and is not going anywhere.
Being able to solve problems creatively is an essential skill for the future.  If I can’t do that in the Journalism field, I will not succeed.  There are certain stories that are hard to get and can sometimes require a little creativity and ingenuity in order to “get the scoop.” Of course there’s the old stand-by of going undercover to get the story but among that there are so many other ways to get stories.  You have to have a creative and a drive for ingenuity in the journalism field which is why you usually tend to see more creatively-minded people as journalists.

In my personal life, there are going to be issues that come along that are going to require some creative finagling to solve,  be it arguments with friends or even just trying to please someone.  People appreciate creativity and a kind gesture which is why I always try to be creative with things such as Christmas gifts and things like that in general.  If an argument arises I try to let the person know just how apologetic I am in a creative and kind gesture. Being creative is one of my favorite qualities in other people and even in myself.  Being unlike everyone else is one of the most attractive things in a person and I know many other people that can attest to that.
